A Cognitive Account of Tense and

چکیده
1. Introductory remarks In contemporary linguistic literature verbal aspect, along with the category of tense, has been one of the most controversial issues. This controversy, I believe, is to a large extent caused by certain misunderstanding and, as a result, misinterpretation of the genuine (that is, not superficially imposed through an application of some arbitrary semantic procedure) grammatical (categorial) meaning of tense and aspect. The controversy is largely rooted in the fact that in many languages of the world the number of grammatical forms of the verb referred to as “tenses”, is more than three, so these forms do not fit very well in the conventional triadic schema known as “time axis” (Figure 1):

The Effect of Direct, Indirect, and Negotiated Feedback on the Tense/Aspect of EFL Learners in Writing
L2 written corrective feedback has been investigated from different perspectives in SLA research (e.g. Ahmadian & Tajabadi, 2015; Bitchener & Knoch, 2010; Ferris, 2006). Taking the cognitive and sociocultural paradigms into account, the aims of the current study are twofold: Firstly, it attempts to find if corrective feedback is effective in improving the linguistic accuracy of L2 learners' ten...
متن کاملConcept-based Instruction and Teaching English Tense and Aspect to Iranian School Learners
The present study examines the role of Gal’perin’s Concept-based Instruction (CBI) as a pedagogical approach in teaching cognitive grammar-based (CG-based) concepts of tense and aspect to EFL students. Following the sociocultural theory of L2 Acquisition (SCT), arming L2 learners with scientific concepts can lead to L2 development by deepening their understanding and raising awareness of L2 str...
متن کاملGetting to the Meaning of the Regular Past Tense: Evidence from Neuropsychology
Neuropsychological impairments of English past tense processing inform a key debate in cognitive neuroscience concerning the nature of mental mechanisms. Dual-route accounts claim that regular past tense comprehension deficits reflect a specific impairment of morphological decomposition (e.g., jump + ed), disrupting the automatic comprehension of word meaning accessed via the verb stem (e.g., j...
متن کاملfMRI of Past Tense Processing: The Effects of Phonological Complexity and Task Difficulty
The generation of regular and irregular past tense verbs has been an important issue in cognitive science and has been used to advance different models of the organization of language in the brain. The dual-system view holds that the regular past tense forms are generated by a rule while irregular forms are retrieved from memory. The single-system view, on the other hand, holds that both forms ...
متن کاملThe Effects of Systemic-Theoretical Instruction on Developing Iranian EFL Learners’ Explicit and Implicit Knowledge of Tense-Aspect System
This study aimed to investigate the effects of Systemic Theoretical Instruction (STI), grounded in Socio-cultural Theory and proposed by Gal’perin, on developing Iranian EFL learners’ knowledge of English tense-aspect system. To this end, two low-intermediate classes, including 24 and 21 language learners aged between 12-19, were taught the distinction between simple past and present perfect te...
متن کاملInterpreting dissociations between regular and irregular past-tense morphology: evidence from event-related potentials.
Neuropsychological dissociations between regular and irregular English past-tense morphology have been reported using a lexical decision task in which past-tense primes immediately precede present-tense targets. We present N400 event-related potential data from healthy participants using the same design. Both regular and irregular past-tense forms primed corresponding present-tense forms, but w...
